Nijmegen, a place to stay

Nijmegen has to offer a lot in many areas of life:

  • Culture
  • Nature
  • Sports
  • Shopping

Nijmegen, seen from the village Lent

The town of Nijmegen is, as well as the Dutch towns of Groningen and Maastricht appreciated by visitors as a cosy town. All three of them have Universities, which explains somethinng. It's a town on a river, the river Waal, the main course of the river Rhine in Holland. It has a beautifull boulevard with its cosy terraces, café's, restaurants, musea, shopping centers (even split-level), casino and the imposing railway- and traffic-bridges. A town, surrounded by completely different landscapes:to the North the Over-Betuwe; to the East the Ooypolder and Millingerwaard with its beautifull park and tea-garden; to the South, on a ridge of hills, formed in the Ice Age, a vast area of woods, reaching into Germany past Berg en Dal (childrens funpark Tivoli). And at last to the South the Land of Maas and Waal.

Nijmegen offers:

In the cultural field: the new Valkhofmuseum; the bycicle museum Velorama, the Byblical Open Air museum, the Africa museum, museum of Natural History, and divers galeries. For theater and music:The City Theater, the Concert Hall Vereniging, Steigertheater, Vrijdagtheater. The new Cultural Center LUX.

Nature: The Valkhof with Barbarossa-ruïne (see picture under beside here); The Kronenburgerpark with gunpowdertower (see picture above); the Goffertpark; and , at the outskirts of the town the Hatertse Fens. And at the East side the beautifull Ooypolder.

Sports: Nijmegen is famous because of the yearly Four-days-March in the third week of July. But there is also a yearly Four-days-cycling event, a Seven Hills Run and skeeler tours. Skating and climbing in the Triavium; skying on the Wychenseberg or relaxing(sauna) in the Sanadome or The Thermen.

Shopping, markets and going out: Since mid 2000 Nijmegen has a split-level shopping street, the new 'Marikenstraat'. With the already existing supply of shops in the city center (Broerstraat, Molenstraat, Burchtstraat, Hezelstraten, Plein 44, Mariënburg- en Molenpoortpassages) and the weekly markets on mondays and saturdays, every shopper should be able to succeed. And for going-out: the City Center is really littered with restaurants, bars, café's en disco's. There even is The Heaven (De Hemel), where you can taste different beers in one go.
